He named this microorganism <italic>Histoplasma capsulatum</italic> because it invaded the cytoplasm (plasma) of histiocyte-like cells (Histo) and had a refractive halo mimicking a capsule (capsulatum), a misnomer (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="F1">Figure</xref>).</p><fig id="F1" fig-type="figure" position="float"><label>Figure</label><caption><p>Numerous, capsulated yeast cells (shown in pink) of <italic>Histoplasma capsulatum</italic> in a bone marrow aspirate (Giemsa-stained, original magnification &#x000d7;400). Source: Shivaprakash Rudramurthy, PGIMER, Chandigarh, India.</p></caption><graphic xlink:href="ET-2703-F"/></fig><p><italic>Histoplasma capsulatum</italic>, a dimorphic fungus, now belongs to Kingdom Fungi and causes histoplasmosis (Darling&#x02019;s disease) through inhalation of spores found in soil and bird droppings. The fungus thrives in the central and eastern parts of United States, especially around the Ohio and Mississippi River valleys, and in South America, Africa, Asia, and Australia. Three varieties exist globally: <italic>H. capsulatum</italic> var. <italic>capsulatum, H. capsulatum</italic> var<italic>. duboisii,</italic> and <italic>H. capsulatum</italic> var. <italic>farciminosum.</italic></p></sec></body><back><fn-group><fn fn-type="citation"><p><italic>Suggested citation for this article</italic>: Mahajan M.
