  Standards by which worker protection is assessed are reviewed. The workplace protection factor is the measure of protection a functioning respirator affords when correctly worn and used. The factor may be calculated by the amount of contaminants the user would inhale without the respirator, divided by the amount inhaled with the respirator. The effective protection factor is a measure of the workplace protection provided by a respiratory when it is worn for only a fraction of the work shift. The laboratory protection factor is a surrogate measure of the protection of a respirator measured in a laboratory that simulates workplace conditions. The fit factor is the measure of the fit of a particular respirator face piece to a particular individual. The fit factor is defined as the aerosol concentration in the test chamber divided by the penetration through the face seal interface. The program protection factor is a measure of the effectiveness of established respirator programs. The assigned protection factor is a measure of the minimum anticipated workplace respirator protection which can be provided to a large percentage of properly fitted and trained users. The authors conclude that the protection factor definitions accommodate the majority of conditions in which the protection of a respirator needs to be specified. [Description provided by NIOSH]
