Description:Roofing, classified with sheet metal work, includes installation and repair of roofing, siding, gutters, skylights, and similar sections of building structures. The term roof includes the roof deck, insulation, and the overall weather protecting surface. The surface cover may be made of shingles of wood, slate or treated asbestos (1332214) tiles of fired clay, flexible membranes of tar treated felt or paper, sheet metals of lead (7439921), copper (7440508), or galvanized steel, and corrugated sheets of asbestos and cement or aluminum (7429905), or iron (7439896). Polyvinyl-chloride (9002862) film is used commonly as a nonflammable vapor barrier below the roof covering. The only substances of potential concern are the bitumens, tars and pitch in the case of built-up roofing. On melting, they give out volatile aromatic compounds which cause burns and skin irritations. (Contract No. 210-77-0120) [Description provided by NIOSH]
