Description:The establishment and building of a residency training program at Meharry Medical College in occupational medicine was reported. The report highlighted facility members and their records, a description of the program itself, the plan through which the program was devised, and the accomplishments achieved through the grant from NIOSH. Program graduates were reported to have entered various positions in industry, private practice and academia. The purpose of the program was to expand the number of residents and initiate a comprehensive master plan for the programs growth into a 4/4/4 program with an emphasis on the recruitment of minority trainees and to develop further the Employee Health Services of the institution into a model facility for training residents in disease and injury prevention, and health promotion. This was expected to decrease substantially the dependence of the present program on external training sites at significant distances, 70 to over 500 miles, from the current campus. At the Ford Motor Glass Facility an Employee Health Service facility was organized and implemented as a model community based facility for training Occupational Medicine residents in a comprehensive occupational health setting. Curriculum modifications were implemented, expanded and shaped as part of a systematic training and assessment initiatives into the overall curriculum. A discussion was provided for the objectives of the project. [Description provided by NIOSH]
