Description:A mass health screening program for the inhabitants of a rural area was described. The program was established in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, and utilizes a caravan health screening team of 14 persons: two physicians, a public health nurse, three nurses, four laboratory technicians, two clerks, and two drivers. Health screenings are performed with the collaboration of local agricultural cooperatives, Saku General Hospital, and other hospitals affiliated with the Nagano Prefecture Welfare Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives. A typical screening utilizes a computerized autohemoanalyzer system which can be supplemented by an electrocardiogram (ECG). Each applicant pays a fee of approximately 16 dollars and 52 cents for a basic screening (autohemoanalyzer) or 21 dollars and 30 cents for the autohemoanalyzer + ECG. Since its inception in 1973 approximately 200,000 persons in Nagano Prefecture have been screened. The most common pathological finding was hypertension. By sex, elevated glucose and diabetes and hepatic disorders have been the most frequently seen pathological finding in males. Anemia has been the common finding in females. A questionnaire survey has shown that of the program participants 79 percent of those who were advised to undergo a thorough physical examination did so. Of these, 52 percent were found to be in need of medical treatment. Ninety percent of those receiving medical treatment have been cured or had their condition corrected.
