  The manual for a NIOSH course in occupational nursing is presented. The course is designed to present to occupational nurses the basic principles and practices of occupational health nursing and to update their knowledge of current nursing practice trends, health legislation, and standards that pertain to occupational health and occupational health nursing. Course activities consist of formal class meetings including lectures and group sessions. The lecture presentations are supplemented by audiovisual materials. Topics covered include basic definitions, a history of occupational health, the scope and objectives of occupational health, occupational health programs criteria, the nursing process, the Occupational Safety and Health Act, threshold limit values, the occupational environment, walk through surveys, the legal aspects of occupational health nursing, current health legislation, principles of toxicology, occupational diseases (including carcinogenesis), occupational safety, women in the workplace, health education of workers, and special topics such as program planning, hearing conservation, and community resources for occupational health nurses.
