Description:The potential production of cobalt from nickel sulfide deposits in Canada, from nickel laterite deposits in the Pacific islands, and from the copper deposits in Zaire and Zambia will be a function of the cost of recovery of the primary nickel and copper products. This cost of production varies significantly for these deposits and is related to the differences in the cost of labor, energy, and supplies; to production technology; and to the grade and recovery of nickel, copper, and cobalt. This Bureau of Mines paper investigates these cost and technology differences as they relate to the cost competitiveness of the deposits in Canada, Zambia, Zaire, and the Pacific islands.
