Description:One of the programs being undertaken by the College Park Metallurgy Research Center of the Bureau of Mines involves developing new methods and improving existing methods for recycling secondary scrap and waste materials. A refining technique that received considerable attention in these studies is the use of high-melting- point intermetallic compounds to remove small amounts of undesirable impurities from base metal scrap. Once the compound has been formed, separation from the base metal can be achieved by decanting, skimming, or filtering. This article describes a technique for removing antimony from lead by forming an insoluble aluminum- antimony intermetallic compound. [Description provided by NIOSH]
