  Worker exposures to organic vapors were determined in an attempt to correlate vapor exposure with the incidence of employee peripheral neuropathy at the Brammer Manufacturing Company (SIC-2434) in Davenport, Iowa, on October 15, 1973. The survey was part of a NIOSH study of the health effects of occupational methyl-butyl- ketone (591786) (MBK) exposure. About 340 of the employees at the facility were assigned to the production area surveyed. The company had no formal safety or industrial hygiene program. Medical services were furnished by local clinics and workers were trained in first aid. Physical and neurological examinations of eight employees with the greatest potential MBK exposures were negative for peripheral neuropathy. Vapor concentration exposures for sprayer operators in the two lacquer booths were below the OSHA time weighted average (TWA) standards except for one sample, which was measured at a multiple exposure limit of 1.00 milligram per cubic meter (mg/cu m) compared with the OSHA mixture value standard of 1.00mg/cu m. The authors conclude that a potential exists for employee exposure to organic vapors in excess of OSHA standards. They recommend implementing a medical surveillance program, medical monitoring of certain personnel, upgrading certain ventilation systems where necessary, using personal protective equipment, and observing several other hygienic practices.
