Description:In 2003, a 44-year-old male farmer was welding on a leed bunker wagon using a very old 240-voll plug·in cord-conneded SMAW-Iype Hobart welder in disrepair. Victim connected two sets of welding lead cables and placed tne un-lnsulaled cable splices on bare dirt. Victim was Iying on damp, bare ground and was sweallng neavily wearing a snort-sleeve shirt. Victim was wearing his welding nelmet. He was not wearing gloves. Victim found sitting under the feed bunker wagon with the welder cables lying across his lap. In order to prevent similar incidents in the future: 1. Maintain welding equipment. Including lhe welder, leads, slingers, and the welding rods so you can safely conduct a welding operation. 2. Use appropriate personal protective equipment as required, such as a welding helmet, gauntlet leather welding gloves/protective sleeves, long sleeve shirt with bullonable cuffs made from heavyweight, tigntly woven 100% wool or cotton. leather apron, jacket, or leg chaps, high top leatner books, and an insulaled electrical safely mat. 3. Develop safe work procedures for welding operations, especially for splicing welding leads. 4. Identify other potential safety Issues, such as the need for a ground lault circuit Interrupter (GFCI). 5. Purchase approved welding cable splices connectors if joining two sets of cables. 6. Purchase welding mat to prevent electrical shock/electrocution in wet or damp ground locations. [Description provided by NIOSH]
