Description:A description was presented of a method for exposing such preparations as cell cultures, blood samples and solutions containing microorganisms to radiofrequencies (RFs) while allowing precise field and temperature control within the same sample over a wide frequency range. Descriptions were provided of the design of the RF cell culture irradiation system, the methods of dosimetry, and the methods for determining properties of the fields in the exposed sample. Samples were provided of some typical dosimetry results from exposed culture samples. The system was examined with controlled temperatures and field strengths. The system was used in determining human RF exposure thresholds in the frequency range up to 100 megahertz (MHz). Electric field strengths up to 100 volts per centimeter (V/cm) at up to 1000MHz were produced by the irradiation system in a 5 milliliter sample of culture medium. By monitoring the feedline impedance, the culture medium temperature was able to be controlled and measured up to 100MHz. At field strengths in excess of 25V/cm it was possible to maintain constant temperatures below 37 degrees-C. [Description provided by NIOSH]
