Description:A discussion of the role and responsibilities of the industrial physician in maintaining worker health, with specific reference to the mining industry. Medical surveillance begins with appropriate preemployment physical examinations and periodic health examinations for workers exposed to risk, especially miners with uncomplicated pneumoconiosis. The physician's responsibility in the workplace also extends to environmental surveillance, such as gravimetric sampling of respirable dust, and research into new methods of dust control. The physician must also consider the psychological health of the worker. Problems of adjustment, whether work- or home-related, impair the efficiency of a worker, endangering himself and those with whom he works. It is the physician's responsibility to be aware of such patterns among workers, and where possible, to facilitate the integration of family and community resources to aid in a solution.
