In-depth survey report of Electro-Coatings, Houston, Texas.

  An indepth survey of control technology was conducted at Electro Coatings (SIC-3471) in Houston, Texas, on August 11 to 13, 1981. The survey was conducted as part of a NIOSH assessment of engineering control technology in electroplating operations. Personal, tank, and area samples were taken for hexavalent-chromium (18540299) (Cr-VI), and sulfuric-acid (7664939) for 3 consecutive days. Total chromium (7440473) (Cr) was collected. Area and tank sampling for Cr-VI and Cr were well within OSHA limits for an 8 hour period. Personal exposures were also below OSHA limits and were 25 percent of the NIOSH recommended standards. For sulfuric-acid, exposures were 5 percent of the OSHA limit and the NIOSH recommended concentration. Employees wore gloves during plating operations and washed their hands frequently during manual operations. The author concludes that the effective control of tank contaminants is due to good local exhaust ventilation and good work practices. The facility has demonstrated that safe and healthful working environments can be achieved within electroplating operations with the use of effective engineering control technology, good work practices, and effective management.
