Effects of non-occupational noise exposure on a young adult population.

  The hearing status of various groups of 18 to 21 year old subjects was investigated. Conventional and high frequency hearing tests were given to an unspecified number of comparison subjects, including sport shooters, rock band members, chronic rock music concert goers, auto and drag racers, and motorcycle and motorbike riders. Among comparisons, high frequency hearing of females was better than that of males, especially over the 8000 to 18000 hertz range. Changes in hearing due to noise exposure could be detected at high rather than conventional frequencies. Motorcycle and motorbike riders had the greatest hearing impairment, followed by drag and auto racers and sport shooters. Rock band members and concert goers did not have significant hearing impairments. The authors suggest that the greater degree of hearing loss in cyclists is due to more years of exposure. They note that some of the groups, particularly the samples of rock band members and drag racers, were not truly representative, and could have biased the results.
