Industrial hygiene survey report at U.S Gypsum Corporation, Birmingham, Alabama.

  Worker exposure to mineral wool fibers and total airborne and respirable particulate material was determined from air samples at the U.S. Gypsum Corporation (SIC-3275) in Birmingham, Alabama, from October 25 to 29, 1976. The facility employed approximately 92 persons. First aid was given by supervisors. Pre-employment physical examinations were given before initial employment and after substantial lay off periods, and examinations were given every 5 years to all employees and yearly to those over 60. The corporate headquarters administered the industrial hygiene and environmental control programs. No local safety or industrial hygiene program manager was employed at the facility. Protective equipment was provided for certain personnel. Housekeeping was a continuous problem. The equipment was old and needed constant attention to function. The concentrations of air contaminants were below NIOSH limits. Chargers, cupola operators, front-end leaders and battline take-off workers were exposed to the highest concentrations of airborne particulates. The author concludes that cupola operators were exposed to the highest combined overall concentrations of airborne fibers and total airborne particulate material.
