Description:The management of Frank Hulefeld and Associates (SIC-7333), Cincinnati, Ohio, requested an evaluation of chemical emissions associated with the use of a table top photocopier. Seventeen employees worked at the studio. One worker who had been exposed to copier exhaust had recently been hospitalized with symptoms of chronic cough, shortness of breath, and wheezing. Environmental samples were taken on June 15 and July 15, 1981. Potential copier emissions and chemicals present is artists' supplies were analyzed. During continuous operation of the copier for 46 minutes, a maximum ozone (10028156) concentration of 0.07 parts per million (ppm) was detected in an air sample taken 2.5 inches from the copier exhaust. This was less than the OSHA standard of 0.1ppm. The affected employee had symptoms consistent with smoking (the employee was a smoker) or chronic ozone exposure. The authors conclude that no health hazard existed due to emissions generated by noncontinuous operation of the copier. The authors suggest that the machine should not be operated on a continuous basis in a confined area without adequate ventilation. [Description provided by NIOSH]
